Presented for your consideration, a cool collaboration of Japanese design house BEAMS and American sportswear company Champion Hooded Long Coat in Navy Blue W/ White Pin Striping AW18 Size Small. Beams Launching in 1976 BEAMS flagship is located in Japan’s Harajuku neighbourhood, the epicenter of Japanese Street Style and “”Kawaii” (“Cute”) culture. Initially Beams imported garments and housewares from the West Coast of the United States and merchandised them as if one were visiting a UCLA dorm room, a “Street x Prep” sort of vibe. Marketed as “American Lifestyle Shop BEAMS,” the highly curated offerings quickly resonated with an enthusiastic Japanese audience. Soon Items from the East Coast of the United States and Europe were added and “BEAMS F” and “International Gallery BEAMS” were borne. Until then, BEAMS was strictly a men’s fashion house but overwhelming demand for women’s pieces saw the launch of “Ray BEAMS” in 1984. BEAMS has collaborated with numerous domestic and international high profile brands through its history with these collaborations culminating in “BEAMS: beyond Tokyo” published in 2017 by Rizolli. To this day, BEAMS has been a privately-owned house headquartered in Tokyo and helmed by Yō Shitara the son of the founder, Etsuzo Shitara. With a 167 stores in Japan alone along with international locations in New York, Milan, London, Paris, Taipei, Hong Kong, Beijing and Bangkok, BEAMS continues to lead innovation in their distinctive reinterpretations of Western style into something inimitably Japanese. Champion Launched in 1919 as “Knickerbocker Knitting Company” by the Feinbloom brothers, the company was rechristened “Champion Knitwear Mills, Inc. in 1924. The 1930’s saw Champion garnering popularity at University bookstores where they introduced the first hooded sweatshirt, the forerunner of today’s “Hoodie.” A company that lead innovation, Champion devised a revolutionary knitting technique where the weave was reversed which prevented shrinkage from washing. The 1980’s saw Champion securing the title of official outfitters for the NBA and gaining traction as a burgeoning Streetwear brand. Renowned globally, Champion continues to remain relevant by combining classic sportswear with contemporary styling. Listing Description Baseball, a popular sport in both America and Japan was the prevailing inspiration behind this Beams x Champion AW18 collaborative piece. The capsule collection is based around an imaginary team of ‘Tokyo Beams’ and is a hybrid of athletic team uniforms, practice kits, fan gear and needless to mention, graphic logos. This particular piece references archival sportswear silhouettes morphed with Japanese street wear.
